House DPA

The design of this house stands out for its harmonisation with the rural landscape of Castrignano del Capo (LE), enhancing the local architectural tradition through the use of natural materials. The choice of hemp as the main material represents an innovative and sustainable key, as it offers multiple structural and environmental benefits.

The project is developed around a simple rectangular volume, where the services and bedrooms are located, while a second body, inspired by the typical Salento construction known as a ‘liama’, houses the kitchen. This area has large openings overlooking a pergola made of bamboo canes, creating a fluid connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces, and enhancing the relationship with the surrounding natural context.

The essential forms and clean lines define an architecture that blends perfectly into the landscape, optimising sun exposure and maximising natural lighting throughout the year. Hemp, thanks to its insulating properties, has been used with sobriety and precision, ensuring high thermal comfort inside the house. It was used for the insulation of the floor, the elevation walls and the roof, thus contributing to a healthy and pleasant environment for its inhabitants.

This project not only respects local traditions, but also represents a step towards a more sustainable and conscious architecture, capable of responding to modern challenges without compromising the landscape and cultural heritage of the region.
