Masseria Le Sterne

The project to restore and renovate a farmhouse in Castrignano del Capo (LE) offers a fascinating insight into how natural materials can be integrated into a traditional architectural context. The project stands out for its focus on sustainability and living comfort, reflecting a growing trend in the building sector towards the use of eco-friendly resources.

The organisation of spaces, with an open-plan ground floor dedicated to the living area and a first floor reserved for services and bedrooms, creates a bright and functional living environment. The orientation along the East-West axis maximises natural lighting, contributing to a warm and welcoming atmosphere throughout the day.

The use of materials such as hemp, cork and earthenware not only promotes thermal and acoustic insulation, but also demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable building practices. The choice of hemp for internal insulation highlights its exceptional properties: in addition to providing thermal comfort, it offers breathability that contributes to a healthy indoor microclimate.

The design of the single-pitch ventilated roof, made of wooden beams and insulated with a hemp lime package, is a further innovation, combining aesthetics and functionality. The terracotta tiles blend perfectly with the local context, giving a traditional touch to the new structure.

In addition, the preservation of the original external envelope, with the tuff ashlars clearly visible, not only preserves the history and character of the farmhouse, but creates a visual dialogue between the past and the present.

The finishing of the interior spaces, with hemp lime walls and coccio pesto floors, suggests a focus on design and comfort, making the rooms not only aesthetic, but also practical and functional for the family’s daily life.

In short, this project not only reclaims a cultural and architectural mass, but does so through a lens of sustainability and innovation, demonstrating how architecture can serve the environment and the community.
